On behalf of the participants of “A Silent Genocide – A Brief Insight into HIV/AIDS,” a short documentary by Tantra-zawadi, filmed and edited by Oliver Covrett, XYAYX Multimedia, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cinema Mostra AIDS for hosting an exhibition of our film from August 12 – 19, 2010 in Sao Paulo, Brazil (http://www.cinemamostraaids.org.br).

The event is promoted by Grupo Pela Vidda/SP, a non-governmental and not for profit organization which has been working in the fight against AIDS for over 20 years in the development of volunteer activities, prevention, and defense of rights of people living with HIV-AIDS. On December 6, 2009, Brooklyn born performance poet/artist Tantra-zawadi, released a short documentary titled “A Silent Genocide: A Brief Insight into HIV/AIDS.” Ms. Zawadi created this project for Stony Brook University’s World AIDS Day banquet.

This documentary offers a brief insight into the personal experience of those living with HIV/AIDS and those striving to decrease the staggering numbers of new infections through art and activism.

The film was shot on location in New York City and Los Angeles featuring commentary by Betty Makoni, the founder of Girl Child Network Worldwide and one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes for 2009. It is directed by Ms. Zawadi and Oliver Covrett of XYAYX Multimedia who also edited and produced the film. Musical contributions for the project include Tut Burks and Xavier Kemp with artwork by Shanna Melton and poetry by Iyapiphany, Jamala Safari and Wynter.

This is Tantra-zawadi’s third project to raise awareness regarding HIV/AIDS. Her video “Scarlet Waters” was featured on the Product(RED) video wall as well as a PSA for Mark Herbert Productions/Betah and Associates.

Tantra-zawadi is an internationally known performance poet/recording artist and the author of “alifepoeminprogress” and “Gathered at Her Sky.” She has performed her soul stirring life-poems to standing room audiences at venues all over the world; most recently at the Badilisha Poetry X-Change Festival in Cape Town, South Africa. Her latest projects include: “Girl – A Choreospective”, “Soldier Blues” and collaborations such as The Love Planet EP by Collective Spirits, Giant Steps-Back From Miami with Do It Now Recordings, Summer Breeze EP by Dolls Combers, Poetic Stimulus, EARTHOLOGY by Floyd Boykin, Jr., and the award winning Liberation Sessions by Mwalim.

Tantra-zawadi best describes her work "by the love that I make through my art to the vision of the unseen reality." Soulful and sublime, her poetry explores love in all its forms; from the rush of the first kiss to the bittersweet. As a performance poet and published author, Tantra supports the rights of women to exist, choose, decide and think through the art form of spoken word.

Tantra has performed to standing-room audiences at venues as far away as South Africa, London, Germany and Toronto as well as venues closer to home in the tri-state area. She has performed original works in the off-Broadway productions of Girl – A Choreospective, A Night of Three God/desses: Soldier Blues and Powerful Women, An Evolution in Reinvention, the Numeral Three, Leaving My Apartment and Other Urban Adventures and projects with the vonduvoisdancecollective. Tantra's recent appearances include the New York Public Library of Performance Arts at Lincoln Center, Badilisha Poetry X-Change Festival in Cape Town, South Africa and the Montserrat Poetry Festival. Tantra is also a recipient of the Kings County District Attorney's Office Award for Women’s History Month for her artistic contributions to the borough of Brooklyn.
